Overnight Newborn Care and Breastfeeding 🤝

I hear this sentence all the time…. DAY IN and DAY OUT, “I’m planning to breastfeed so I’m not sure how beneficial a night nurse will be. I’ll have to get up anyway.”

I do see the point. Especially if you’ve had a super chill newborn previously or you’re having your first baby. Having an overnight newborn caregiver can and usually is still very beneficial. If you’re breastfeeding or pumping, you absolutely will still be up and night. You’ll need to stimulate your milk production around the clock.

As you’ll soon learn…. Brand new babies eat every 1-3 hours around the clock and this doesn’t stop at night when the sun goes down. You’ll also soon learn, that just because baby sleeps doesn’t mean they’re quiet. It also doesn’t mean you’ll sleep. Just because baby is fed, doesn’t mean they will sleep independently, peacefully or at all between feeds.

So yes, you’ll still be UP every 2-4 hours, but if you have overnight newborn support you will have a guaranteed 2-4 hours of sleep (if you choose) as opposed to potentially being up from 2am-5pm because babe is fussy, we’ll handle that. You’ll only be up feeding baby when they’re showing signs of hunger. We tend to them overnight while you rest and snooze between feeds.

“How can this service benefit me if I’m breastfeeding?”
— Most moms we connect with
  • You’ll get to sleep when baby isn’t feeding FOR SURE and then we only bring baby in when they need to feed. No rocking for 3 hours when you’re freshly postpartum and drifting off while holding baby.

  • A lot of new parents feed baby every time they make a noise. We’ll only bring baby in when they’re showing signs of hunger so everyone gets into a sustainable pattern and baby isn’t at the breast when their real need is sleep or snuggles. You aren’t a pacifier!

  • Early on, you won’t know their cues which can result in attempting to feed when not hungry, holding baby endlessly for hours at night because it’s hard to get them down, etc. We’ll establish a pattern from birth that encourages independent sleep in a safe sleep surface in the most gentle, organic and developmentally appropriate way. With no tears!

  • Over time, mom should be able to add in a pump as baby grows and starts stretching overnight. By 5-7 weeks, most of our moms are able to sleep 5-8 hours straight overnight only having to wake once to pump, depending on their supply and baby’s needs.
