Making Room Sharing with your Newborn Safe + Sustainable

Ohhh Baby S N U G G L E S

As easy as it is to fall asleep snuggling with your baby on your chest, think again for the baby’s sake...and safety.  Keeping your baby sleeping close by and room sharing at night may be more convenient than running back and forth to the nursery as well as reduce the threat of SIDS by 50%.  There’s a right way to do it and a wrong way to do it. Here’s some quick tips to make things safe and easier:

Safe Sleep Space

Keeping your baby close at night is a good thing…but not too close!  The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends “keeping your baby’s bassinet, play yard or crib in your room for the first six to 12 months. Room-sharing decreases the risk of SIDS and makes it easier to feed, comfort and watch the baby”.

Shusher / White Noise

Shushing sounds (either by you or the Shusher Machine) can be calming to a baby.  While in the womb, a baby is used to hearing muffled sounds and the sound of a mother’s blood stream, which is naturally calming and makes them feel secure.  White noise machines have a similar effect as well as drown out loud noises during baby’s sleep.

Fan/Cool temperature

Keep the room temperature between 68-72 degrees to prevent your baby from becoming overheated..  An overheated baby could be at risk for SIDS

Diapers and Wipes Handy and Close!

Pro Tip! Keep a stash of diapering essentials like diapers, wipes, cream and baggies for the stickies in a caddy close by so you’re not fumbling around in a dark room.  Plus it makes quick changes easy and fast.

Red Flashlight

Did you know that blue light waves emitted from light bulbs disrupt your melatonin? After all of your hard work in getting the baby to sleep, turning on regular white lights will work against that sleepy feeling and will produce a feeling of arousal.  Instead, use a red light or red flashlight, which will promote the production of melatonin as well as produce enough light for you to see while you attend to the baby for feedings, diaper changes or comfor
