How to Make Mom Friends

As a Newborn Care Specialist and Postpartum Doula, I’ve seen my fair share of Postpartum Anxiety and Postpartum Depression. As much as I would love to say my beautiful face and shining personality is all my clients need, even research  shows that peer relationships reduce low mood and increase self confidence. Making mom friends can feel tricky at first, but once you find your people, it’s a game-changer. Here’s a friendly, no-pressure guide to help:

1. Start Where You Already Are

  • School/daycare drop-offs: Smile, say hi, mention something small, and keep it light. My morning commentary usually revolves around needing another cup of coffee.

  • Parks or playgrounds: Compliment her kid’s toy or mention yours loves the slide too. You’ll notice kids have absolutely zero sense of personal space, and will naturally wonder to you and your child.

  • Library storytimes / baby classes: Goldmine for casual connections.

 2. Be Bold with the Small Talk

Start simple:

  • “How old is your little one?”

  • “Where did you get his/her outfit?!” (Most of us moms spend a lot of time/energy picking out our kid’s outfits before they fight us on it)

  • “Do you guys come here often?” (Yes, it works for mom dating too)

 3. Join Mom Communities

  • Local Facebook mom groups

  • Peanut app (like Tinder for mom friends!)

  • Mommy and Me classes

Reach out to Harmony about the parenting classes coming out soon!

 4. Make the First Move

Invite a mom for:

  • A coffee after drop-off

  • A stroller walk

  • A “let the kids burn energy at the park” hang

Even just swapping numbers with, “We should meet up again sometime!” works.

DISCLAIMER FOR NEW MOMS: Hanging out with mom friends is going to look differently. It might mean y’all are both overstimulated at the same time, but we’re looking for solidarity and good vibes here.

 5. Be Chill

Not every mom will be your vibe, and that’s okay. It took me a full year to feel anything like myself after I had my daughter. Some friendships got deeper as time went on. Even if you don’t feel connected, sometimes it is just nice to know people who are going through the same season of life as you. The more you put yourself out there, the more likely you are to find someone who gets you.
